Abdoulaye Doucoure opened his troubled time under Frank Lampard in Everton, revealing that their relationship had overthrown a sharp fall, which led to his exclusion from the first team.
Lampard took over Everton in January 2022, a leading club in the Premier League in a dramatic way with a crucial 3-2 win over Crystal Palace, a match in which Doucoure was in the starting lineup.
However, despite the initially positive relationship, things soon took a peek between the midfielder and his manager.
Thinking about his experience under Lampard, Doucoure shared his frustration for lack of communication.
He said, “He didn’t talk, there was no communication between me and him,” he told the breakdown of overlap. “I trained with under the age of 21, because I was excluded from the team, pushed me away.
“After a home game, we had a big quarrel between me and him. I wasn’t happy and I told him the truth because I was honest, and he didn’t like it. During Lampard’s term, which lasted 44 matches, Doucoure rarely was given an opening role. On the contrary, under managers like Carl Ancelotti, Sean Dyche, and now David Moyes, he was a key player.
“Frank Lampard is the only manager who didn’t believe me much. I think he made a mistake with me to be honest. I am a diligent guy and a modest person, I work hard in training. Obviously, he can decide, I never challenge the choice that the manager brings .
“Sometimes you have to be fair and I don’t think he was fair with me, leaving me on the bench for so many games and not giving me the opportunity, it just upset me with him. I just waited my chance, and he didn’t believe me, and I think that was wrong because after that I just proved it.
“It was very difficult because I love Everton, and because of my relationship with him I pushed out, I was almost from the club. So it was very sad for me, because when you start exploring your capabilities, going to another club – I never Wanted.
Ever since leaving Everton, Lampard has been taken over by Coventry City manager and has seen improvements in team results. Doucoure believes his former manager has taken important lessons from his time at the Goodison Park.
“He was a great player, he was a fantastic player, everyone knows it. But as a manager, in Everton it was a big lesson for him, and I think he learned from it.”
