Apple is being sued by child abuse victims for failing to comply with iCloud’s child abuse device monitoring (CSAM) plan, reports. In 2021, Apple announced that it is working which may show images of such abuse and inform the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. But the company was hit by the same backlash because of technical secrets, and in the end .
The lawsuit, filed Saturday in Northern California, seeks more than $1.2 billion in damages against a potential class of 2,680, according to NOW. It says that, after Apple showed off its planned child safety devices, the company “failed to use its own design or take steps to detect and mitigate” CSAM on its devices, which led to victims being harmed as the images continued to spread. Engadget has contacted Apple for comment.
In words to The New York Times Regarding the case, Apple spokesman Fred Sainz said, “Child abuse is abhorrent and we are committed to combating the ways in which children are put at risk. We are working quickly and efficiently to address these cases without compromising the safety and privacy of all our users.” The case comes just a few months after Apple and the UK organization of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).
