Chelsea late encourages the signature of Manchester City Prospect Nico O’reilly as they continue their search for a new center midfielder.
The 19-year-old had only six times for the older sides of Pep Guardiola, but his potential caught the attention of Blues, who wanted to add another top young talent to their ranks.
With Carney Chukwuemeka who is likely to leave before the transfer window closed and Romeo Lavia left to injury, Chelsea is thought to strengthen his midfielder. However, the city is reluctant to separate with O’reilly without maintaining some forms of future control over the player – something that makes it difficult for negotiations.
According to a transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea did an official investigation for O’Reilly.
He wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Chelsea continues to work on a new midfielder with Man City investigation for a midfielder born in 2005 Nico O’reilly.
“The city does not want to lose future control over the player – not an easy job. A query for Mathis Amougou reported last week, still on the list.”
Saint-Etienne Mathis Amougou midfielder was a key club player from their return to Ligue 1, which he has scored 16 appearances so far this season.
As previously reported to be capturedChelsea sees an 18-year-old as a long-term perspective and discussion still last with their Blueco owner group. If an agreement is reached, there is a great chance that Amougou initially joins Strasbourg, Chelsea’s sister club, to continue his development.
O’Reilly’s potential move to Chelsea follows the successful capture of Cole Palmer at the club 2023. Despite being highly rated in City, Palmer fought for a regular minute under Guardiola before Chelsea got into a 47 million euro business.
Since then, Palmer has become one of Europe’s best performers – of course, Chelsea will hope that O’reilly, if signed, can follow a similar trajectory.
Given that the deadline is quickly approaching, Chelsea works against the clock to complete the agreement, but with the city hesitating to release a talented midfielder without conditions, providing his signature will not be simple.
