Manchester United moved up to fourth in the Europa League standings with just one more ‘league stage’ remaining, after beating Rangers 2-1 at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
Rangers looked to have grabbed a late point to boost their own hopes of reaching the knockout rounds when Cyriel Dessers canceled out former United goalkeeper Jack Butland’s earlier own goal. However, Bruno Fernandes appeared even later with a ‘captain’s goal’ in the 92nd minute for the victory.
It was a much-needed tonic for Ruben Amorim and his side after Sunday’s painful Premier League defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, but actually a fourth straight win in Europe.
United’s fate ahead of their eighth-round trip to Romania’s FCSB is firmly in their hands, hoping to stay in the top eight and bypass the play-off round straight into the last 16. Rangers can also be more or less assured of progressing, but the top eight is likely to be beyond them.
