Fans were treated to some rare Champions League action in January as the revamped competition nears the end of its league phase.
The penultimate round of fixtures leaves Round 8 – which sees all 18 matches played at the same time next Wednesday – well set as Europe’s heavyweights fight for their place in the knockout stages.
for some, their place in the last 16 is securewhile others are fighting for a place in the top eight that would allow them to avoid a nervous play-off in February. Beggars can’t be choosers, however, with several of the continent’s elite still fighting for any path to the knockout rounds.
A lot remains up in the air, but experts say choose have predicted how the final Champions League the table can look.
Liverpool and Barcelona are the only two teams guaranteed to finish in the top eight and automatically into the last 16, but Arsenal almost certain to join them barring a freak implosion against Girona. The Premier League the leaders are also given an 89.1% chance of finishing first at the end of Round 8, with Barca the only other side who can steal top spot.
Between they have a similar probability of finishing in the top eight and have been given a 97.7% chance of avoiding the play-offs. Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen and Milan are all favorites to enter the last 16, too, whereas Aston Villa they predicted eighth and are expected to leapfrog the Europa League champions Atalanta.
Bergamo side and Lille both have about a one-in-three chance of making the top eight, s Feyenoord and Borussia Dortmund they gave themselves an outside chance to get directly into the round of 16.
Things look less optimistic for the European giants Bayern Munich and Real Madridwho are guaranteed a place in the play-offs but look increasingly unlikely to make the top eight. The German side have just a 7.9% chance of finishing eighth or higher – just 0.6% more than the impressive debutants Brest – while the current champions have only a 2.9% chance to avoid the unwanted play-off.
Celtic guaranteed their place in the play-offs despite being unlikely to finish in the top eight, but the Bhoys are in a stronger position than Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City. The French giants are in the top 24 after their own 4-2 win over Cityzens on Wednesday, but still have a 14% chance of being eliminated. They are visiting Stuttgart on their last trip.
Man City are in real danger after a hugely disappointing campaign. They host Club Brugge in the 8th round and will be favorites to taste victory in that encounter. A win would guarantee a place in the play-offs, but choose give them a 36.2% chance of missing. Nervous times for Pep Guardiola and his players.
