Southampton have reportedly set a £55m price tag for Tyler Dibling as the Premier League strugglers look to fend off interested clubs.
The Saints are bottom of the league table after a poor season so far – but one of their bright sparks has fallen out of favor with the teenager.
Newcastle are thought to be interested in the striker, but now Sky Sports are reporting that Chelsea are also at the table.
Reporter Lyall Thomas reported on Wednesday night: “Southampton would not accept offers of less than £55m at least for Tyler Dibling this month; as #AstonVilla, #Chelsea and #Tottenham continue to monitor the 18-year-old’s progress at #SaintsFC.”
This was a successful season for Dibling. He began to make a name for himself at Southampton after a brief spell at Chelsea in 2022, where he made just two appearances for their academy.
He was offered approximately £3,000 a week to stay at St. Mary’s, but a higher offer from Chelsea took him away.
However, the Exeter-born striker – who is also loved by Manchester United – struggled to fit in at the West London club and after just a few appearances for the Blues’ youth wing, he was being negotiated to return to Southampton again.
According to The Athletic last month, some senior figures at Saints expressed concern at first. The club was concerned about the message it could send to other academy players if the club welcomed someone who had left and then decided to return.
But Matt Hale, Southampton’s academy director at the time, wanted the best players at the club so he forced them to offer him a contract with a significantly reduced salary – and he signed it.
Dave Horseman, academy coach at the club at the time of Dibling’s return, praised the teenager’s attitude. He said: “When I knew he was coming back I sat down all the U21s and U18s and explained what was going on.
“When he came back from Chelsea, he went to the U18s. He had to earn the right to come back. He never moaned, at least not to us, and looking back, when you stack the dice, he showed that he was a strong character.
“He had to vacuum it up and leave again, and I’m sure Tyler was as embarrassed as anything when he came back.”
