Canon has developed a 410-megapixel full-frame sensor


Canon has announced a new product 410-megapixel, 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor“the largest number of pixels ever found” in a sensor of its size.

Because of the detail the new sensor can record, Canon hopes it will be used by “monitoring, medicine and industry,” which requires “high resolution.” With 410 megapixels, the Canon sensor has 24K, 198 times more than HD, and 12 times more than 8K. This makes it easy to crop and enlarge the image captured by the sensor without losing detail.

In most cases, high-end megapixels are limited cameras with central sensors. But the beauty of Canon putting more pixels into 35mm is that it should be used “in conjunction with full-frame sensor lenses.”

Canon had to make a few changes to make this possible. The new sensor has a circular shape and a “back-illuminated design” where “the pixel part and the signal processing part are connected.” This means a reading speed of 3,280 megapixels per second, and video at eight frames per second. The monochrome sensor can focus four pixels at a time to capture bright images and record “100 megapixel video at 24 frames per second,” says Canon.

It’s not clear if this type of sensor will make it into a consumer camera anytime soon, but the fact that this miniaturization is possible means one day, for aspiring photographers.
