Monaco vs Aston Villa: Preview, Predictions and Lineups

Aston Villa travel to Monaco for the penultimate game of the Champions League on Tuesday night.

It was a memorable return to Europe’s premier club competition for Villa, who took a big step towards a place in the last 16 by beating RB Leipzig 3-2 last time out. Unai Emery’s side have won four of their six league games, with their continental campaign highlighted by a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich.

Villa now face Ligue 1, having fought back from 2-0 down to claim a point Arsenal in Premier League on Saturday.

Back-to-back defeats in this competition mean Monaco will likely have to endure a knockout play-off to reach the last 16. After a strong start to their second season under Adi Hutter, Monaco’s form dipped in the new year and they were beaten by Ligue 1 bottoms Montpellier on Friday night.

The hosts have few problems in attack and Hutter will rely on experienced Swiss striker Breel Embolo in front of a young creative triumvirate.

Monaco are without former Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun with a shoulder injury and new signing George Ilenikhena with a muscle problem.

Wilfried Singo and midfielder Denis Zakaria missed Friday night’s disappointing defeat to Montpellier and are doubtful for the trip to Villa.

Predicted line-up of Monaco against Aston Villa (4-2-3-1): Majecki; Vanderson, Salisu, Kehrer, Henry; CHAMBER, Magassa; Akliouche, Golovin, Ben Seghir; Piston.

Ollie Watkins

John McGinn has recovered from a hamstring injury and could feature on Tuesday after returning to Villa training. However, a place in the starting 11 is unlikely.

Lucas Digne is set to replace Ian Maatsen at left-back, while Leon Bailey is also pushing for a return to the squad despite Jacob Ramsey’s return from injury.

Donyell Malen was an unused substitute this weekend, having just arrived from Borussia Dortmund. Emery should give the Dutchman his debut here.

Jhon Duran could be rotated back into the squad to offer the in-form Ollie Watkins some rest.

Predicted line-up of Aston Villa vs Monaco (4-2-3-1):Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Minga, Digne; Kamara, Onana, Tielemans; Bailey, Duran, Rogers.

Villa have been quite inconsistent at home but they have looked easy in the game Champions League and they can secure their place in the last 16 with a win here.

Emery’s shrewdness in one-off opportunities paid off and Villa managed to raise their game on the big occasion.

On Tuesday, they face a dynamic and vertical Monaco team, but one that is young and out of shape. The hosts will have their moments and Villa may have to weather a few storms, but Emery’s smarts will see them through another tricky European away day.

Prediction: Monaco 1-3 Aston Villa
