As part of the immigration reform plan in the United States, the Trump Administration has eliminated the functionality of the CBP One program, the US Customs and Border Protection program that is used by asylum seekers to allow admission to the United States at the southwest border. As of January 20, 2025 the program can also be used to schedule admissions, and everything. existing positions removed, according to the CBP website.
The CBP One program was introduced in 2020, and was designed developed into a weapon for those seeking asylum in 2023, being the only way immigrants can plan to “schedule an appointment in advance and remain eligible for protection,” according to American Immigration Council. The program “allowed 1,450 migrants per day” to schedule entry, The New York Times writesand has helped more than 900,000 people enter the country since its launch in 2023 until the end of 2024.
No warning was given to asylum seekers that the program was ending on January 20, and the Trump Administration did not specify what would replace it. Engadget has contacted US Citizenship and Immigration Services and US Customs and Border Protection for more information and will update this story if we learn more.
CBP One was revealed to be the problem of the new administration during the Vice Presidential Interviewwhile Vice President JD Vance said there is a program that allows immigrants to schedule an appointment and be granted legal status in the US. That’s not how CBP One works, and in fact the Biden Administration’s use of the program has been criticized for slowing it down and making the process more difficult, leading some candidates to wait up to six months for a match.
