President Trump on Monday announced the US withdrawal from the Paris climate accord shortly after his inauguration, echoing a similar decision in his first term that was later reversed by former President Biden .
The White House confirmed the withdrawal in a memo to House Republicans seen by The Hill, saying, “President Trump will withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement.”
The process of decommissioning the agreement will not be immediate. In his first term, Trump announced the withdrawal in 2017, and the process became official two years later.
The agreement, signed under the Obama administration in 2015, includes nearly 200 countries that aim to work together to keep global surface temperature increases below 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
Once the announced withdrawal is completed, the US and Iran will be the only major emitters of greenhouse gases that are members of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and are not parties to the agreement.
Gina McCarthy, who served as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the Obama administration and as a senior climate adviser for the Biden administration, condemned the decision in a statement in The Hill and said the onus will fall on states and municipalities to make up for it. for withdrawal
“By abandoning the Paris Agreement, this administration has abdicated its responsibility to protect the American people and our national security. But rest assured, our states, cities, businesses and local institutions are ready to pick up the baton of US climate leadership and do everything they can, despite federal complacency, to continue the shift to a clean energy economy, state and local efforts every day will focus on providing good-paying jobs and reduce energy bills, reduce pollution and protect our health,” he said.
The announcement is one of several Day 1 moves by Trump that reverse Biden-era climate policies, and more reversals are likely to follow in the coming days and weeks.
