Ruben Amorim has warned Manchester United players and fans that they will continue to suffer until the end of the season.
United’s 3-1 defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion it was their sixth home defeat in the Premier League this season and fourth under Amorim.
The Portuguese coach made no bones about his post-match media duties, suggesting United’s current line-up perhaps the worst in the club’s 147-year history. And he warned that there could be more pain for all concerned, reaffirming that he will not change his beliefs and methods to turn things around.
“That’s clear to me. It’s clear with me that I’m not going to change the way I see the game,” Amorim said, when asked if it was time to do things differently. “I’m very clear about that. The players will suffer and the fans will suffer. I’m really sorry, I have one way of doing things.
“We have to survive this moment and everyone is very clear what we will do. I explained this situation. I will play the way I play because that was the idea. I was very clear in everything, with the fans, the board and everyone.
“They knew what to expect from me. But that’s not the most important thing, it’s not acceptable to lose so many games. In five games at home, losing four and winning one, it’s really difficult for any club. Imagine that in Manchester United – so we have to improve.”
Amorim’s candor led him to admit that United “have to be a different team” if they are to make any progress, with the former Sporting CP boss admitting that things have been too easy for a Brighton side who are now just four points adrift of Premier Leaguethe first four.
“You have to understand the moment, but also understand that it’s not to lose so many games in the Premier League, regardless of the situation. Regardless of the moment. It shouldn’t happen,” Amorim said.
“They were comfortable and we tried not very good football. You can see this game and remember nothing. We can’t also finish the game like that, with everyone out of position. So we have to finish the game in a different way. No Regardless result, we have to be a different team.”
