Bluesky has grown significantly over the past year, which is required for the platform to increase its efforts. In his recent speech management report for 2024, Bluesky said it grew by about 23 million users, jumping from 2.9 million users to about 26 million. And, its managers received 17 times the number of reports they received in 2023 – 6.48 million in 2024 compared to 358,000 last year.
Most of these reports were about “harassment, harassment or intolerance,” spam and misleading information (including fake and other false information). The presence of accounts appears as other people following the popularity of Bluesky, it is a platform it is a “very aggressive” way to try to deal with it. At the time, it said it had quadrupled its management team. The new report says Bluesky’s management team has grown to nearly 100, and hiring continues. “Some managers specialize in specific areas, such as volunteer child protection assistants,” it says.
Other groups Bluesky says have received many reports of “difficult and inappropriate” and unwanted sex. There were also 726,000 reports labeled “other.” Bluesky says it responded to 146 requests from “law enforcement, government, law firms” out of 238 last year.
The platform plans to make changes to the way reports and complaints are handled this year that it says will “improve user interaction,” such as giving users updates on what they’ve done on their posts, and further, allowing users to appeal removal decisions directly from the app. Administrators took down 66,308 accounts in 2024, while its automated system took down 35,842 spam and bot accounts. “Looking forward to 2025, we’re implementing new monitoring systems to match user reports, because the growing network needs multiple ways to quickly detect and deal with bad things,” says Bluesky.
