TikTok is restoring operations in the US

About 12 hours later TikTok is black In the United States, video sharing software is coming online again.

“In cooperation with service providers, TikTok is in the process of restoring service,” the company said. “We thank President Trump for providing information and assurance to our donors that they will not face any penalties for providing TikTok to more than 170 million Americans and allowing more than 7 million small businesses to thrive.”

A law that could force TikTok’s parent company ByteDance to sell the app or see it banned in the United States is expected to go into effect today. The law also made it illegal for US companies to distribute, develop, or improve the software.

As President-elect Donald Trump is about to take office, White House officials Joe Biden and the Justice Department said leave enforcement to the Trump administrationbut TikTok said that “essential service providers” need “verified voices,” otherwise the app will be dark. And sure enough, the app stopped working last night and disappeared from the Apple and Google Play stores.

Earlier today, President-elect Donald Trump tweeted this he will be giving the command of the elder which would delay the ban, and he said that he wants to see TikTok reinstated as soon as possible because “Americans need to see our Grand Opening on Monday.” To that end, he said his order “ensures that there will be no liability for any company that has supported TikTok so that it is not in the dark before I start ordering.”

This was seen as a sufficient guarantee for TikTok and its service providers. The TikTok app was already working for several TechCrunch writers at the time the company released its statement. However, as of 1:05pm Eastern, it still appears to be unavailable in the Apple app store and Google Play.

And not all lawmakers were there. In response to the TikTok announcement, Republicans Senator Tom Cotton wrote that “any company that hosts, distributes, operates, or supports the communist-controlled TikTok could face billions of dollars in damages.”

Trump’s decision on Sunday morning also indicated that his “initial idea” of a deal for TikTok to operate in the US would include “an agreement between the current owners and/or new owners where the US would acquire 50% ownership.”

In a statement, TikTok said it will “work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States.”
