Former main champion Matt Fitzpatrick insists that he is “on the right track” that goes to the US Open this week, after having suffered a dramatic fall in shape in the last 12 months.
Fitzpatrick won the maiden main title with one win at the US 2022 US Open in Brooklines before registering victories at PGA Tour and DP World Tour next season, where he was also part of the European success of Ryder Cup in Rome.
The Englishman was world no. 16 at last year’s US Open in Pinehurst no. Live from Thursday on Sky Sports Golf.
Fitzpatrick briefly forced himself during the last round of the PGA Championship last month before finishing with the sixth sixth, seven shots behind Scottie Scheffler, and the 30-year-old wanted to upgrade his best ending of the year during the rest of the season.
“That (PGA Championship) gave me huge confidence,” Fitzpatrick said Podcast Sky Sports Golf. “It was a strange feeling that came out with the 18th because I was delighted with the goal, but at the same time I disappointed the last few holes.

“I hit so many great shots during the week. I just hit a few poor and strange for me, I just missed several trips. Suddenly I opened them, I think I’d end up in a bound second and obviously it’s the second week.
“I gave up in a much better frame of the mind than a great week and played really well all week. It’s the most stylish game in the world, but I definitely feel like I’m on the right track. I definitely think things go better.
“I feel like I have more confidence in my game, more confidence in what I do. I feel like I got a little more now and believe that and probably, in some way, be a little more aggressive to try and go after that and I really get some victories.”
Fitzpatrick’s US Open success came in the same place where he won an American amateur nine years earlier, with an amazing approach to firing from Bunker Fairway – on 72 hole – helping to set up a pair -Putt pair that is needed to delay Scheffler and Will Zalatoris.
“Nothing will never be on the top of Brookins, it’s just not,” Fitzpatrick admitted. “I can’t believe how fast it went (since 2022).
“I think I’ve been looking forward to all week from the moment it was announced to be there. I’m excited that she obviously returned no matter what.
“I think I’m obviously in that moment, I actually played really well and really somehow put myself in a quarrel in a lot of events, which was really nice.
“I think he obviously arrived with confidence, although it was nine years ago that I played the American amateur there. I felt like I knew that course better than everyone else, I got that confidence and – especially when I played well there – it just came together.”
Fitzpatrick has played in three of the last four Ryder Cup for the Team Europe, a partnership of Rory McIlroy in both Fourballs sessions during their victory 16.5-11.5 over Team USA 2023.
Luke Donald kept the captain for this year’s Bethpage Black competition, Live from 26 to 28 September on Sky SportsWhile Fitzpatrick is currently 39. Place on the qualifying ladder and it is probably necessary for this to be considered for several months.
“I spoke briefly with Luke (Donald),” Fitzpatrick added. “I think, since I have experienced now and knowing how it works, I’m not trying to force it.
“I’m not like sending the message of Luke and saying,” I really want to be there, that’s really important to me. “If I play well, then I’ll be there and if I’m not playing well, I won’t be there. I’m happy to accept it.
“My experience Ryder Cup is not exactly how you dream as a kid. I like to play Ryder Cup, I like to be part of the European team with all the guys, but at the same time it doesn’t hurt at the moment because I know where I am and I know where I lie.
“I know I’m not that close to the team and I know I have to have good results to even get into the frame of the mind to choose and what else.
“It’s really something I’m not thinking about being honest – it’s very far in my head. I’m just trying to focus on where I am and somehow get out of the hole in which I was and just leave from there.”
