Luciano Spalletti was fired as the coach of Italy, but will oversee their World Cup qualifier with Moldova before leaving the place.
Italy, which has not qualified for the 2014 World Cup, when they went out to the group stage, began on Friday with a terrible start of the 2026 tournament qualifiers.
Azzurri threw Norway 3-0, which now follow nine points in the UEFA I. Six points behind Israel in the second place playing two games less. Each of the 12 group runners will progress to the play-offs.
Faced with the humiliating look that the potentially missed 48 World Cup teams, Italy starred, rejecting Spalletti after just under two years in the business.
Spalletti revealed a decision at a fire conference for journalists ahead of the game on Monday with Moldova in Reggio Emilia, which will now serve as a farewell.
“We talked last night and they told me that I would be free from my position of the main coach of the national team,” Spalletti said.
“I was sorry, given the relationship we had, I had no intention of giving up.
“I would rather stay my job and do my job, especially when things are not going well. However, if it is a release, then I have to accept it. I have always gained this role as a service to my homeland and want to help the future of the national team.
“I think it’s right to look for the best, I’ll break the contract. I’ll be there tomorrow night against Moldova. I always claimed that my players are strong. The results under my administration are as they are and I have to take responsibility.
“I love this shirt, this job and the players I trained. Tomorrow night I will ask them to give what I asked from them, even if I couldn’t make them show their best.
“I didn’t want to end up with the situation of the second night, but with a good game. I always told the boys that they were the right guys going to the World Cup. There were complications, but now I was expecting a level of consciousness and showing that they were still real guys.”
Asked what he said in his meeting with the President of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) Gabriele Gravina, Spalletti replied: “I would continue with this group. There is an assessment of how we reached these games.
“Many players were worn out at the end of the season, we were not in the best of the states. But they are my players. Even those who had injuries were in a position to invite.”
Spalletti led Italy until the Euro 2024, but the defense of their European title ended with a surprise defeat of 2-0 in Switzerland in the last 16.
He won 11 of his 23 responsible games, drawing six.
Pressing if he changed anything from his time as a coach, Spalletti said, “Neither do I know. I’m convinced that it won’t be a walk in the park, but that I will continue to arrive at the World Cup. I am still convinced of that. That was still my belief when I was talking to the gravity.
“My world does not collapse when I lose games. There is a position between vision and accepting the results, but I am far below the necessary level because they are strong players. In the past, it is a waste of time. You cannot influence the past. Now it’s crucial to play a game that is worth the shirts we wear.”
Spalletti ran after asking him if he was felt by the border issued, which will now be in charge of finding a heir, and Claudio Ranieri and Stefano Pioli have been seen as job candidates.
