Before each Formula One race, celebrities and VIPs from around the world were invited to network in moments that led to the light-time-accepted tradition that became a key part of the spectacle of the day in the race.
But with this privilege comes one unwritten (but holy) rule: if you are online, you are expected to talk to journalists when you are approaching them.
Not everyone followed the rule – and the star of Arsenal and England Bukayo Saka was the latest that inadvertently left the line.
On the eve of the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, Saka was noticed online, along with the teammates of England Eberechi Eze and Trevo Chalobah when Sky Sports F1 Head Simon Lazenby approached him with a simple question: “Who do you support today?”
Sakin’s answer? “Not much to say.” Lazenby quickly moved on.
But nearby was the F1 World Champion of 2016, Nico Rosberg, who appeared less than impressed with Sakin’s reluctance to hire.
“That wasn’t very kind,” Rosberg said, before drawing his attention to Newcastle Defender Dan Burn, who proved to be much more affordable.
It is a good thing that Saka did not knock down Martin Brundle, who usually leads walking in the net and is known for his humorous vomiting. Just ask Pepa Guardiola, who gave Brundle a cold shoulder on the Grand Prix Abu Dhabi in 2022, saying that he had talked to Sky twice that day.
While safety gently escorted Brundle, he gave up, “It’s okay. I was thrown out of better places than this.”
Classic Brundle – and a reminder that if you go to walk with a grid, it’s better to be ready for a microphone.
