Oscar Piastra again extended the leadership of his World Cup over Land Norris after defeating his teammate in McLaren to win in Spain’s Grand Prix, as Max Verstappen was punished for a controversial late collision with George Russell.
Taking his fifth victory at nine races this season, Piastra always looked into complete control in Barcelona after turning his impressive pole into the run in the race at the start, as Norris almost immediately fell behind Verstappen to third place.
Norris soon overtook Verstappen to get back to another, but the charge of his teammate never truly materialized, which means that Piastra leaves the European triple header with extended lead of 10 championship points.
Seemingly aware that unlikely to beat McLarens with an absolute pace on the same strategy, Red Bull diced cubes by putting Verstappen in a three -rate strategy compared to Piastra and Norris’s more conventional two.
It kept Verstappen in hunting to second place behind Norris in the final stay before a safety car was called with 10 rounds to go when Mercedes Kimi Antonelli stopped in gravel.
All the leaders changed their tires, but Verstappen was now vulnerable because Red Bull equipped his car with the only tires they left – new hardmen – the rest around him were used but faster, glued.
Almost spinning from the last corner when the race was restarted, Verstappen was overtook Charles Leclerc on the run to turn one – with two cars in contact straight before.
Russell then tried to move down Verstappen, but Red Bull was wide, but returned on the right path and stayed in front of Mercedes. The Red Bull Pit wall soon told the Dutchman to return the place to Russell, but, just as it seemed to have done so, two cars came into contact as the Mercedes started from the outside.
Stewards muffled Verstappen’s ride and quickly released the four -time world champion with a 10 -second penalty, lowering him from the fifth to the age of 10.
Since Leclerc occupied third and Russell’s fourth, Nico Hulkenberg asked for a amazing heel for Sauber with a late overtime of Lewis Hamilton, who fought for Pace in another Ferrari all afternoon.
