Lewis Hamilton blamed himself for the “terrible” Spanish Grand Prix after finishing the sixth in Sunday’s race.
On Saturday, Hamilton enjoyed his joint best qualification and started in fifth place, but quickly came under the pressure of teammates Ferrari Charles Leclerac and released it after only nine rounds.
The driver Ferrari then ran in a lonely heel as long as the second pit was stood on him, stood on his back foot in the fight against former Mercedes teammate George Russell and dropped him to sixth place.
The safety car to retire to Kimi Antonelli gave Hamilton a late opportunity to make up for the land, but was overcome by Sauber Nico Hulkenberg.
“Well, what do you want me to say? I had a really bad day and I had nothing to say. It was a tough day,” said the desperate Hamilton Sky Sports F1.
“There’s nothing else to add. It was scary. There’s no point in explaining it. It’s not your fault. I just don’t know what to say.”
When he said if a team could find some answers, he added, “I’m sure it won’t – probably was just me.”
Hamilton hoped he would stand on the podium for the first time as a Ferrari driver, but instead had “zero positive results” from Sunday.
He said, “I have no idea why it was so bad. That was the worst race I had experienced.”
Hamilton’s racing speed is usually power, but Leclerc has obviously surpassed him during 66 circles around Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and now is 23 points behind his teammate Ferrari in the Championship.
Director of Ferrari Tim Frederic Vassur revealed that Hamilton had suffered a problem on the car before a late safety car, but did not say what the question was.
“You are experienced enough to make a conclusion after the first words of the driver,” he said.
“If you want to create controversy, you can. But that’s not the case. I think he did 70 percent of the race ahead of Russell. I’m not sure Russell said the race was a disaster.
“But then we had a problem on the car for the last time, before a security car. The result is not good, but it made 45 circles ahead of Russell.”
Hamilton won Leclerc only once this season at the races, which arrived at Grand Prix Emilia Romagna last month.
Sky Sports F1Nico Rosberg says “It’s hard to watch” his former teammate fight.
“Sunday was a terrible day for him because he was just a dispute, which is very unusual,” Rosberg said.
“Yes, sometimes he is in qualifying, but he is usually really terrible in the races, and the race was shockingly bad.
“He has no answer either. Was there any damage on the floor? These floors are so sensitive and there can always be a little and lose a lot of time.
“When you have no answer, it’s really hard as a driver, then you see your teammate racing in third place on the podium. In the light of the season, so far it has had a very dark situation.”
