England hopes that Mary Earps made the correct decision after withdrawing from duty Lioneses

England skipper Leah Williamson expressed support for Mary Earps after retirement of goalkeeper from international football.

Earps, who was recently joined by Paris Saint-Germain, confirmed that he would no longer play for England on Tuesday, just over a month before the Euro 2025 began.

The announcement time has attracted some criticism, but when asked if Earps’s decision viewed as selfish, Williamson defended his friend’s choice.

“I think there will be that decision to be one of the most difficult things in your career,” Williamson said.

“She is a man first and I hope Mary is fine and that’s the best decision for her. She’ll miss us.”

Williamson, fresh from raising the women’s Champions League trophies with Arsenal last Saturday, also shared how close he was for the Union and outside the field.

“I talked to Maria, she’s one of my closest friends in football-so I’m devastated, just because I love her, I like to be her teammate,” she added.

“I think the way he carries an English T -shirt is an example to all of us, so I am very sad that these memories will not continue in the T -shirt in England.

“But she thinks it is the best thing, and I’ll always support her in that.”

Chief coach Sarina Wiegman also addressed the exit of Earps, admitting that she was “very disappointed and sad” for the decision.

She added: “It had to be a really difficult decision for her and so it is for us.

“Of course, I have some conversations that I don’t want to share here because it’s between us. It’s hard, it’s hard for me, and at the same time it’s hard for her.

“She did such a great job for England. She made a huge difference, and we had an incredible trip so far. I really nurture him.

“It’s emotional because we have a relationship and we had such a mass trip together with a lot of top -notch and, of course, some downs.

“That’s what makes really difficult. But we have to move on and now we don’t have time to celebrate because we go to Euro.”

Earps concludes his career in England with 53 appearances over eight years.

It was part of the detachment that raised the 2022 euros trophy and 2023 female finals, and also helped England to reach the World Cup finals last year.
