New England chief coach Charlotte Edwards says she was impressed with her side as they ended the 3-0 t20i series against West Indies, but admits that the upcoming OPE is a key preparation with a world cup around the corner.
In her first series, the EDWards side went into victory in the first two matches before the victory in the 17th win in the third T20I on Monday.
The West Indies captain Hayley Matthew’s player was again impressive, took three Wickeke and then hit 71 to keep the game competitive.
However, a permanent knock from Heather Knight (66no) achieved the result of England to a reputable 144-5 – enough to switch them over the line – while playing with injured knees.
For Edwards, the T20 series showed that her side took over her instructions to be “ruthless” with a baton.
“I think we first wanted to win the 3-0 series and I’m really pleased with that,” Edwards said Sky Sports.
“I think Hayley Matthews put us under pressure and I was very pleased with how the bowlers reacted.
“I was so impressed with the hit unit, I told them to be ruthless and when they got the opportunity to win the games, to win them.
“I think we did it all.
“This was a little more difficult day for us, but the way we moved through the baton, we got the result and brilliantly made the ball … I was really impressed with the fighting and reaching the blamed result.”
Edwards also returned Issy Wong and Em Arlott in the English lineup and believes that they both proved their value with the ball in their hand, and in the second T20I took three shots at a distance of seven balls.
“I look at every way we can improve,” she added.
“This is my first series with this team and try to learn about players and roles.
“I want us to play the game ahead and I think that is really important at this point, not looking too far.
“Obviously we have a World Cup for 12 months in the T20I cristen, which is really important.
“But I want the players to play the conditions they are in and I think they did it.
“I think they deserve their options to return to this English team.
“I’m really impressed with Wong.
“Arlott, we’ve all seen her in a home crown and how good she was, but come here and really easy to watch in the international cryr is really comfortable.
“We haven’t seen her baton yet that I’m very excited to see.”
Although the form is crucial to Edwards when choosing its part moving forward, she admits that some players already have a “currency at the bank”.
Nevertheless, she feels “competitive” in a team that pushes everything to be in order.
“There are several of our players who have received a currency at the bank regarding their performances,” Edwards said.
“I feel that there is a real competitiveness around this team at this point.
“I think they saw the choices we made, the girls worked hard on this 10-day block, I loved every minute of working with them.
“I think they just push themselves.
“Bell was amazing with the ball. Arlott the previous game- you can see how this competition was formed and Lauren Fileler was sitting on the bench.
“These are exciting times.”
With one victory of the series under the belt, all eyes will be on the set in a series that starts against West Indies 30 May.
This will be part of the key preparation of England for the 50th Cup World Cup, starting September. Without Nat Sciver-Brunt as a bowling options over the summer, Edwards will use it to learn its best combinations.
“I feel that these games are really big for us,” Edwards said.
“We probably have nine games before the World Cup starts, so there will be a lot about getting the right balance of the team.
“Nat will not bowle in this series and probably won’t summer.
“She had a somewhat Achilles problem and we want her to suit her and shoot for the World Cup.
“It gives her a good opportunity to look at other options.
“We know we have these options if and when Nat returns to the bowl.”
