Selectors in India have held informal conversations with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant, but remains a hesitant to inherit Rohita Sharma as Captain Test, understand Sky Sports News.
Sharma withdrew from the test cricker in early May, leaving the role of captain empty in front of the series this summer in England, which begins on June 20th.
India is expected to publish its next captain and test detachment for the English series this week.
Sky Sports News reported that Gill and Pant were two best candidates for the role, and Jasprit Bumrah decided to fight to play a full five test series.
Both Gill and Panto sounded, and the selectors were divided.
One selector in BCCI is reserved that Gill gave the captain, since his place in the side was not guaranteed and suggested that he would be more appropriate for the role of vice president.
The source in the Indian Crite told Sky Sports News that Sharma originally wanted to play the England series and retreat in the middle series, similar to Mrs. Dhoni’s test retirement during the 2014 Australia series.
However, the selectors wanted consistency during the series and offered Sharmi the opportunity to go to the series, but not as a captain. Instead, he decided to withdraw.
Virat Kohli will also be missing from the England series after announcing retirement from tests, shortly after Sharma stepped down from the Red Ball crislet.
Sky Sports News contacted BCCI for comment.
