Rachael Blackmore’s professional riding career has stretched just over 10 years. But she slaughtered a few boxes with big races.
The daughter of a milk farmer and a school teacher, Blackmore became an unintentional seeker as she set up a growing list of the first during what was an exceptional time in the weighing room.
She had to earn her own leg on the racing circle of Ponia, who saw so long before he cut his teeth. But she also competed in other cavalry events and studied a diploma of Kopitar science at the University of Limericka, with her mother Eimir, encouraging her to continue her studies because she felt that she was unlikely a career with full -time.
In February 2011, Blackmore rode his first amateur winner for John ‘Shark’ Hanlon in Thurles, and he just encouraged her to make a jump. He also secured his first professional victory in Clone on September 3, 2015 in Clonmel.
According to his own confession, Blackmore was an “extremely average” amateur and felt the best way to change his chances of a professional in search of more driving and in turn more success.
Her diligent attitude was neatly awarded when the champion of Irish conditional was crowned in 2017 – the first first – the year that would prove to be the center as if she regularly rode for Stud Michael O’Leary Gigginstown House Stud, his race manager and brother, Eddie, recommended Blackmore to coach Henry de Bromhead.
And so one of the most successful partnerships of Racing was born.
The duo enjoyed a multitude of success in the big race together, but the winning titles of Blackmore can be distilled on three horses to greet from Knockeen’s yard – Honeysuckle, plus Tard and Minella Times.
This is not that they are humiliated like other festival heroes, such as Captain Guinness, Bob Olinger, Endoi Allen, Quilixosos of others or any of the other Blackmor fame, just that trio has committed at the oldest phase.
Her relationship with Honeysuckle encompassed the first of the 19 races of the mare to her last, and De Bromhead described the duo as the “perfect storm” of Blackmore’s glow and “deadly” talent.
Their triumph of Huntle Triumph 2021 marked the breakthrough for a female rider in the festival window, although De Bromhead quickly underlined that Blackmore’s ability should not be observed by gender conditions – which the rider himself echoed.
Then she said, “No agreement on this. If you want to be a jockey, you can be a jockey. Take ahead of you.”
This was supposed to become her topic as she continued to break the barriers, not at least when she achieved worldwide fame through Grand National Victory Minella Times, shouting, “I don’t feel male or female – I don’t even feel human! This is amazing.”
Maybe it’s the fact that Blackmore at Cheltenham Gold Cup on board on board, you had to read a few passages in the racing section before even the first victory for a female rider.
Blackmore was only seen by those who know as one of the best in the weighing room, the end of the discussion.
Attention that went with a super -shadow status did not always sit well with Blackmore, which is not one that would naturally put itself forward, rather, she preferred to talk on the track.
Her mother welcomed her determination and humility, adding: “Despite its success, Rachael remains true to herself. It is not good to have a success if you are not a decent human being.”
Indeed, De Bromhead found a huge support after the tragic death of his 13-year-old son Jack in an accident with Ponia in September 2022.
He said, “Seeing her around when we had our own tragedy, around the kids, they are their friends and all of us – she is an amazing person except that she is a great jockey.”
There was barely a dry eye in the house when Honeysuckle signed his fairytale career with Mares’ success Hure’s Hurtle just six months after the accident and Blackmore’s first thought was for Jack after crossing the line, to what was an extremely emotional day around.
It would be fair to say that Blackmore became a favorite of fans, without a better illustration than the support she saw her Grand National Mount 2023, and it was not a shame sent to just 10-1, although he just won a rush in a moderate beginner, and his owner Brian Acheson said he was “useless”.
The inspiration to the multitude of young fans of the race, whether or not he enjoys the label, is slaughtered as the original game exchanger.
