Former Arsenal manager Arsena Wenger proposes to change the Rules of Offside for the return of the advantage of the attacker.
Wenger is a global development chief for the World Managing Body FIFA believes that VAR has basically removed that advantage from the game.
Currently, the player is judged to be in the offside if any part of his body is not outside the last defender.
Wenger would like to see a change that is considering if any part of his body is in line with the last defense player.
He compared a proposal to change the rules made after the 1990 World Cup.
This tournament recorded an average of 2,21 goals per game, which is the lowest in the history of competition, thanks to the large part of the rules he thinks he is an offshore striker if he is in line with the last defender before the goalkeeper.
In an interview with Bein Sports, Wenger said: “It was in 1990 after the World Cup in Italy, when there were no goals scored.
“We decided that there was no more offset when you were on the same line of defenders.
“In the event of a doubt, the suspicion uses the attacker. It means when there is a fraction, the attacker has received the advantage.
“With VAR, this advantage has disappeared and for many people it is frustrating.
“That’s why I suggested that as long as any part of your body is on the same line as a defender, you are not in the offside.
“Now we experiment with that. In one year, the decision will make, ifab, not me.”
Wenger’s suggested change is experimental in Italian youth football. The Sports Foreign Acts, the Committee of the International Football Federation (IFAB), agreed that in March further trials under the leadership of FIFA will be in March.
IFAB said that the intention of experiment was to determine whether the proposed changes were “encouraging football and encouraging the possibilities of scoring goals while holding on to the attraction of the game”.
The decision could be made on proposals in 2026.
