Mercedes teenage newcomer Kimi Antonelli claimed a shock but amazing position of the maiden pole in Formula 1 for Sprint in Miami GP.
The 18-year-old replaced Lewis Hamilton this year in Mercedes after a sevenfold movement of the Ferrari champion and competed in his sixth weekend Grand Prix.
Witting on the street track in Miami, which he had never drove before, Antonelli unbolled a great individual circle in the decisive SQ3 phase of the SPRINT qualifier to win the Oscar Piastria World Championships at the head of Saturday’s Sprint grid at 17:00 to 0.045s.
Italian is the youngest driver who requested a half position for any of the F1 qualifying format, beating the record held by Sebastian Vettel from 2008 to more than two years.
“Exceptionally. What an effort so young driver,” said Martin Brundle of Sky Sports F1.
“There is no experience with Miami except on the simulator and came out and broke the circle. It’s an extraordinary effort.”
Although beaten on a 19 -round race pole, Piastra was still in front of McLaren Land Norris teammates, and Max Verstappen fourth for Red Bull when returning to the track after his first child’s birth, daughter Lily.
But there were disappointments for George Russel in another Mercedes, which could only manage the fifth.
Russell qualified and ended up in front of his new young teammate on every competitive session so far this season until Friday, but this time he finished 0.309s Adrift from Antonelli after his exit strategy did not pay dividends early to the SQ3 trail.
Ferrari pair Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were sixth, or seventh, the latter are a little closer to their teammate than it was at recent events on just 0.2 faces.
Six weeks ago, Hamilton took the first year of Sprinters’ pillar in China, but fought in the SF-25 since he continued to win in that race in a short form.
In the eighth eighth, Alex Albon limited the competitive day for Williams, although Carlos Sainz gave up in SQ2 in another car after running at 11 at the 11th, Isack Hadjar was ninth for racing bulls, and Fernando Alonso returned to Top 10 for Aston Martin at 10.
