Eni Aluko apologizes for criticizing Ian Wright and says his support for the female game was ‘significant’

Eni Aluko apologized for suggesting that Ian Wright blocked women’s possibilities to break into broadcasting on women’s football and insisted that “there is nothing but love and respect” for the former Arsenal attacker.

ALUKO starts comments in an interview with the Women’s Women BBC Radio 4 In which she said that Wright “should be aware of” the prominentness he covered with a female game and gave a wider point that important women “were not blocked from the path” into covering sports.

Wright is a longtime advocate of a women’s game, and also paid for the rehabilitation of Stoke City Kayleigh McDonald from ACL injury.

Aluko received a wide criticism for his remarks, not necessarily about blocked paths for women, but to extract Wright.

Today she answered Instagram, writing: “Ian Wright is a great emiter and a role model whose support for the women’s game was significant.

“In my interview with women’s hours this week, I was trying to highlight a wider point of limited capabilities for women in football – whether in training, broadcasting or commercial spaces – and the importance of creating more space for women to progress on and off the field.

“But it was wrong for Ian’s name to be raised in that conversation, and for that reason I honestly apologize. I know and collaborate with Ian for many years and have nothing but love and respect for him.”
