The formerly united champion in the lightweight category Sergei ‘Krusher’ Kovalev (36-5-1, 30 ko) ended his 16-year career in a positive note, achieving the technical knockout of the seventh round over Artura Mann (22-5, 13 ko) on Friday night in Yunost Arena in Chelyabinsk, Russia.
Fighting in front of his hometown, the 42-year-old Kovalev landed a left left, right left combination to lower Mann on the canvas. After Mann born in Kazakhstan returned to his feet, his corner decided to stop the fight. His legs prayed after he returned, and it would not be good to allow him to continue.
Earlier in the fight, Kovalev overthrew Manna with a short left hook in the second round. Mann was seriously injured after returning, but stormed the Storm after taking heavy blows from Kovalev. In the last seconds of the circle, Mann lowered the second time, but the judge judged sliding. It looked like it could have been a legal murder.
In three and four rounds, Mann fought well, sometimes marked Kovalev with short blows and made him consume energy. Mann suffered a cut over the right eye in the third round from a hit with repeated stiff stabs from Sergei.
‘Krusher’ looked visibly tired of the energy he spent in the second round. Still, Mann could not use his fatigue due to a low piercing output. He was constantly going forward, but without throwing himself and allowing Kovalev to land at the blows and strokes of electricity at will. Mann had power, but he didn’t let his shots.
Kovalev got his second wind in the sixth and significantly increased the exit. Manna marked a lot of blows in that circle, and you could say that the fight will not last much longer if Arthur did not start throwing something back.
This performance of Kovaleva can give him other thoughts about retirement, because in this fight he looked good compared to some of his recent ones. However, he did not have to worry that he would return anything because Mann was like a punching bag. The cruise division is weak. So, there is a possibility that Kovavan is working in the title.
His age might be an obstacle because he can’t afford to spend years trying to fight for the world title. Also, the money would not change for Kovalev, unless Turkey Alalshikh has interested in funding the fight between him and one of the champions.
