Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk signs the extension of the contract at Anfield


Virgil Van Dijk signed a new contract in Liverpool.

Skipre Reds’s current contract expired at the end of the season, but he wrote fresh conditions that would see him stay at Anfield for at least two more years.

He said on the club’s website: “I’m very happy, very proud. So much emotion obviously went through my head, talking about it.

“It’s a proud feeling, it’s a sense of joy. It’s simply amazing. The journey I have had in my career so far, so I can expand it with two more years in this club is incredible and I’m so happy.”

The news was widely expected after the Netherlands International confirmed that progress was reached last week after a long period of negotiations.

Van Dijk joins Mohamed Salah committed his future to Liverpool after the Egypt striker signed a new contract last week.

The 33-year-old was associated with a move to Saudi Arabia, but said his first choice always remained on Merseyside.

He added: “It was always Liverpool. That was the case. He was always in my head, it was always a plan and it was always Liverpool.

“In my head, I had no doubt that this was a place for me and my family. I am one of Liverpool. Someone called me the adopted Scouse the other day – I’m really proud to hear these things, it gives me a great feeling.”

Van Dijk joined Southampton Liverpool in 2018, for £ 75 million in the world’s record fees for veterans and is probably the leading central half in European football in the last seven years.

For Liverpool, 314 appearances performed and helped them win the Premier League, Champions League, FIFA World Cup Club, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and two league Cup.
