George Russell says he does not feel “stress” because of his constant waiting for a new Mercedes agreement because he believes that long -term contracts in Formula 1 do not “mean nothing”.
The 27-year-old British driver in the last year of his current agreement with Silver Arrows, with the absence of extension, is particularly observed for strong performances.
The Mercedes team director Toto Wolff said last month that last year’s public attempts to wait for the ruling world champion Max Verstappen, but the instability in the Dutch Red Bull team and Russell’s unexplained future ensured that the point of conversation remained.
Asked about his contractual situation before Grand Prix Saudi Arabia this weekend, Russell said: “On my part, there is literally no stress, without any worries.
“When it comes to contracts, everyone gets so excited about it, and the fact is that drivers had contracts, and if they did not perform, they would start.
“For drivers is a performance of our currency. That’s what we have. And if you perform, all is well. So I’m just excited to race this weekend, focus on performance and the future is classified.”
Russell made an extremely strong start to his 2025 campaign, scoring three stands in the introductory four rounds to sit only 14 points from McLaren’s Land Norris at the top of the ladder.
Automat Earlier this week, he reported that Russell was close to signing a two -year extension, with an option for the further season of 2028.
Rachel Brookes from Sky Sports F1 asked Russell about the validity of that rumor, along with alternative theories that he had not yet spoken to the Mercedes and that his strong form was irritation at Verstappen Camp because they would weaken their negotiating position.
Russell replied, “The rumors are never true.
“When you said rumors, I didn’t listen so much. Several of them are reasonably close, I suppose, but at the end of the day we never talked about the contract before May or June in the season.”
The three -time winner of the Grand Prix then explained why he believed that signing a long -term contract is not of great importance.
He said: “I would say that more abnormal point is how many drivers have this, a kind of, long -term offer.
“But they all have output clauses, they all received a performance clause. The driver who is on a three -year contract does not really mean anything if they have an exit clause or a team has an exit clause if the driver does not occur. That doesn’t really mean much.
“If you have a contract with the team, but the team wants you to leave, the team finds a way to leave you.
“This is how this sport works and it should work because we are the top 20 in the world and ruthless. There is no time to confuse. All you can do is focus on a quick ride.”
