Alejandro Domonguez, president of the administrative body of the football body of Conmebol, officially suggested that the FIFA World Cup in 2030 is expanded to 64 national teams instead of the currently approved 48.
The proposal was presented on Thursday at the 80th Congress of Conmebol and aimed at becoming a special release of the tournament.
FIFA, which manages international football, was already aware of the proposal when the Uruguayan delegate raised it at the Virtual meeting of the FIFA Council March.
“We are convinced that the centenary celebration will be unique because 100 years are celebrated only once,” Domonguez said in Congress.
“That is why we suggest, for the first time, to maintain this anniversary with a 64 team, on three continents at the same time.
“This will allow all countries to have the opportunity to live world experience, so no one on the planet is omitted from the party.”
The edition of the 2030 World Cup has become the most appropriate geographical expansive ever, with six host countries on three continents.

Uruguay, who hosted the inaugural tournament in 1930, is expected to hold a match as part of the centenary. Other co -organizers include Argentina, Paraguay, Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
Expolving the tournament, all 10 Conmebol Member States – including Venezuela, who has yet to qualify for the World Cup – would probably be safe places in the competition.
If carried out, the revised format would double the number of matches from a model of 64 games used from 1998 to 2022, which has led to 128 games in total.
Despite the excitement about Conmebol’s proposal, not all ideas support. UEFA President Alexander Ceferin has previously expressed concern, calling the concept of the 64-tower World Cup “Bad Idea”.
Skeptics claim that such spread could dilute the level of the game and undermine the importance of the qualification process, especially in traditionally competitive regions.
