Southampton Boss Juric desperately wants to avoid becoming a ‘worst Premier League team’

Southampton chief Ivan Juric is desperate desperate for his players to prove that they are not “the worst team in the history of the Premier League”.

The saints endured the poor season, currently sitting the bottom of the Premier League and 17 safety points after only two wins all season.

They have only nine points out of their 29 games so far, two shy of 11 in Derby County in 2007-2008. And they have picked up only three points since December, they are in the real danger of failing to reach it.

“The team has to compete and try to do our best. We have to be really motivated,” said Juric, whose semifinalists of the FA Cup Southampton is Wednesday.

“I don’t want to be that we are the worst team in the history of the Premier League.

“If we cannot be the last on the table, we have to do our best, so at this point this is our goal.

“I think we are in good shape, we can do it and we will try to win the match.”

Juric Coy over the future

Juric took over Russell Martin in December, but failed to prevent the promoted side, because the side of the southern coast is being prepared for another seaosn in the championship.

The former head of Turin and Roma stopped transferring his future to the club of the past this season and said he was focused on direct challenges.

“I think if you want to create something, you have to have people with a strong idea, knowing what they want and start building something, start creating something,” he said.

“Sometimes, however, you try to do it best with the players you have.”

The worst ever Premier League teams

Derby’s infamous 2007-08 season is currently the worst ever of 38 Premier League matches, but which are other parties to collect low points.

Before Derby, Sunderland had an unwanted tag of the worst team in history after raising a quiet 15 points during the 2005-06 season.

Sheffield United approached the end of the lower than 2023-24, the same as Huddersfield collected in 2018-19.

The current quarterfinalists of the Champions League Aston Villa will also descend as one of the worst to see the best flight after a chaotic campaign in 2015-16 in which they only managed to collect 17 points while they first gave up the Premier League.

  1. Derby 2007-08-11 points

  3. Sheffield United 2023-24-16 points
