Viktor Hovland had so little belief in his momentum that he thought he had not introduced the Valspar championship, only to end the “incredible” week with the first title of PGA Tour for more than 18 months.
Hovland was the latest Golf Superstar 2023, winning the last two events of the PGA Tour season – to seek FedExcup victory – on the eve of the key role in European success, Ryder Cup, before he experienced a sharp fall in his game.
During this magic, Norwegian repeatedly transferred the trainers swings and passed eight months without passing 36 holes on full ground, including players after carding 80th in the opening.
Hovland’s late decision to extinguish it at the Innisbrook Golf Resort was awarded with unexpected success, where in the last round 67 he was winning him in one goal over Justin Thomas and asked for the victory of the first PGA Tour Championship 2023.
“I came in last week and I wasn’t really sure if I would play or not until I arrived here on Tuesday afternoon and played nine holes late,” Hovland admitted after his victory.
“The next morning I played nine holes in Pro-AM and we were ready to go here. Yes, I wasn’t sure I would show up, but I’m glad to be.
“That seems amazing. Last year and a half it was a fight, so that I get back and win in this tournament is pretty amazing because I didn’t hope my game led this week. It just shows that this game is pretty crazy.”
After getting out of the players early, the man who Hovland said to former coach Grant Waite said he was “one of the few guys to solve” his momentum with momentum, and Switch brought a direct victory to the return of PGA Tour.
I just passed by the weekend, he finished three consecutively missed cuts for Hovland, who after his second round admitted to still hitting “lots of bad shots” and is not always safe in the direction of his ball.
Hovland’s brilliant and short gaming skills are still lacking in consistency, leaving it a significantly series of PGA TUR statistics compared to the previous seasons, and the 27-year-old is surprised by his ability to close his seventh PGA Tour title.
“It’s still the same momentum,” Hovland said Golf Channel After his victory. “I hit a lot of disgusting shots, but they just go where I look at.”
Later he added: “I still hit the same shots as the whole year, I just could do it extremely good time this week. I felt like any good shot I hit, I just saved it well.
“The club is simply not in a great place for me. That is not what it used to be. I can no longer trust in my old feelings because the club is in second place and I have to change the release pattern to do so.
“Incredibly, I was able to do it and I was able to win and I think I am extremely proud – that I can appear at the PGA Tour event – on one of the most difficult golf courses we play all year long – and I still win with my best things.”
The victory returns to Hovland back to the world no.
Hovland will look to improve at last year’s disappointing main campaign, where he missed the cut in three of four, although he admitted that he still needed work to cause a win on the masters next month.
“It will be very difficult for me to argue in Augusta if I do not correct this problem if I do not see improvements there (in his momentum),” Hovland admitted.
“It’s just a different golf course (up to Valspar Championships). You will hit so long iron in the par-four and you have to drive it quite far because the fruit roads are quite wide. The more paradise bombers are than this place (where) it is no longer precise than the teenager.
“There are still some things I have to improve, but luckily we got two weeks and this is sure to have a nice one in my head, leading to Augustus.”
