Viktor Hovland was stable in the middle of the wild Saturday charges and demolished at the Valspar Championship, leaving him in a three -way match for the lead in Innisbrokok, and two dozen players are still in mix.
Jacob Bridgeman showed a lot of broom in his first path as a leader of 36 holes, falling four goals behind the turn and gathering one under 70 years to share the lead with Hovland (69) and Nico Echavarria (66).
They were in the seventh beneath with seemingly all for heels. This includes Justin Thomas, who left on Friday, hoping to make a cut. He shot 30 on his back for 65, the lowest circle ever on the Copperhead track in Innisbrook, to finish two behind.
Jordan Spieth was as fun as always, he twice made a bird from deep in the woods, and in addition to missing a couple of short couple -patta and had to settle for 67.
He was still only four goals behind Sunday, with 23 players separated by four goals.
Byeong Hun was the only player to reach nine below with a bird at the 11th hole, just to make five Bogey in the last seven holes for 72.
“It’s fun to be in a quarrel, but it’s a little stressful when you don’t feel super comfortable because of the ball,” Hovland said. “But man, it’s fun to see some break and still see the ball near the hole and put some good results there.”
Echavarria, who defeated his second PGA Tour title last fall in Japan, ended up significantly in front of the last groups and played without Bogey for his 66, made a bird on a bird on all three pair 3s on the back nine.
“This is a golf course where you don’t have to be a leadership that starts to get leaders,” he said. “We have seen that this is a hard golf course. You have to drive the ball very well here. You have to hit the greenery. It’s hard about greenery. So tomorrow we’ll have the opportunity to have a good circle.”
Ricky Castillo enjoyed 68 and was one shot behind. Thomas and Shane Lowry, 70, were among the five players in five below, and Billy Horschel, 69, in a big group another goal behind. Lucas Glover, 69, was part of a group with Spiet at four behind.
“The leading board is stacked. There are probably 25 guys – maybe 30 guys – it can still win this golf tournament,” said Jeremy Paul from Germany, who fired 70 and was in two shootings. “Trying to put together a good circle and see where it puts me.”
