Women of England have been moving in the summer with a new captain for the first time since 2016, but who is to replace the Heather Knight in running and why was the change needed?

“We all know, lately, the team just didn’t perform. When that happens, unfortunately, changes must be made.”

Why is the change needed?

Dagnall: “The separation between Australia and England was obvious in this recent series of women’s ashes and a lot to change. I think you have to look more and the decisions that have been composed there.

“It is necessary to look from a woman’s perspective of England, because Australia streets are in front. I was just in WPL, the women’s premier league in India, and athleticism, fitness, quality and carrier of the Australian players are just a lot more.

“England can get there, but I think someone needs someone to get in with fresh ideas and a realistic approach where England should be the next two or three years.”

Greenway: “England only really knows where they are when they play against Australia and, from that series Home Ashes, they had a lot of bilateral series against nations, which, with all due respect, should win.

“I think they were dormant in a false sense of security and thinking they were at a point or at the level where they needed to be, when they were not really.

“Australia was far and above the better team in the ashes we know. Obviously the exit from the T20 World Cup would be a real shock for them, but what pointed out was a team that simply couldn’t occur under pressure and in the moments of Crunch.”

Is Sciver-Brunt Favorite?

Dagnall: “I think she’s an obvious candidate for a joke, but I think you have a real balance to somehow strikes here.

“Is she the best tactical captain? No, and that was obvious in that situation pressure in the game against West Indies – a game that you should win very easily. Tactically, I think she leaves a little wanting.

“After this WPL, she just scored the fact that she’s the best player in the world. I wonder if you want to add another burden to her or you just want her to go out and be a player who is?

Greenway: “One of the criticisms ECB had was that they did not make any pre -planning to take over from Heather (Knight) when it eventually stopped.

“Sciver-Brunt is currently the most obvious option. She is the one who has had the most experience in the role of captains outside the level of England, and did so several times for England.

“My argument I don’t think it’s doing that is our best player and he already has such a great responsibility within that team. Does he want to do it? I don’t know.”

Who are other captains opportunities?

Dagnall: “The captain’s elections are not necessarily fantastic and I think Knight can still give a role.

“Amy Jones was a little caused by a domestic crunch, also Sophie Ecclestone. But again they are not presenters for me. Kate Cross goes to the fall of her career and plays only two formats.

“England shot here in the leg, because the planning of the succession was not great. Nat Sciver-Brunt will be the top of the list, but whether it is the right option remains to be seen.”

Can Knight still play with England?

Greenway: “Her batches were always very powerful. As every dough does, she went through the tips and skills, but in general – as a captain and as a cricket – she was always able to manage this double role and find the way she would perform.

“Moving forward now, she is still one of our best shots of the middle row. When it comes to playing spin bowling, often she and Sciver-Brunt who are nuclees in England trying to get us out of the problem or lead the path to a more aggressive style.

“England must really try to find a way to include it as a player and that the dynamics will move forward with the new coach and captain will be something that will be new for everyone.”
