‘I have overlooked, but now I have a chance for the World Cup’

Dan Burn says that he thought his chance to play for England might not come, but now he targets the World Cup place.

The 32-year-old had a lot of weeks, scoring the starting goal in winning the Newcastle League Cup over Liverpool before joining the first team of Thomas Tuchel.

Just seven years ago, Burn played in League 1, and his career saw spells with Darlington, Yeovil and Wigan before moving to the Premier League.

“I think I overlooked, but I understood that,” he said.

“When the new manager came in, there was a clean board, but once it transferred you during so many international holidays, you somehow accept the time, but luckily, the new manager took the opportunity for me.

“It probably made me very resistant. I don’t think in my career I didn’t have a straight line trajectory, I started really late and it was very worse and down.

“I made a debut in the Premier League 21 and three years later, let me in Fulham, so I think he just strengthened me.

“I doubted my career a lot. I doubt many people who watched me play in Darlington would say that I would sit here as I do a press conference for England.”

Burn said his goal is now to secure his place in Tuchel’s World Cup campaign and appear on the biggest football stage.

He added, “I’m trying to take it at the camp at the camp. I just want to make a big impression and try to make the next camp.

“But obviously every child’s dream is to play in the World Cup or even play for my country, so I know that I have the opportunity, if I use it, it’s special.”
