Ange Postecoglou returned ‘Mr. Hindsight’ critics and paddled on suspicion of his ability to manage Tottenham Hotspur.
Postecoglou, who led the Spurs to the Europa League quarterfinals on Thursday, went out with a fight with an extraordinary response to the pressure he was at the club during the second season.
On the eve of Fulham on Sunday in the Premier League, Postecoglou asked how he solved questions about his future and if there were more surveillance in Tottenham than in his previous jobs, and the club was sitting in 13th place in the table.
In a press conference that lasted more than 30 minutes, he said: “Yes, there is more control because there is more noise, but that does not mean that it has to influence you.
“I said a lot, many times that it doesn’t concern me, because I’m not really sure that people somehow experience that role, and especially me as a person, to think that I would take care of tomorrow if there is a negative outcome. I just don’t live my life that way. I’m not saying that. I don’t think so. I don’t think in that way.
“I love what I do. I get up every day, I accept the challenge, I see where the possibilities are and continue to move.
“There’s a lot of noise. I think there are always two sides.
“Some people really enjoy the process for some bizarre reason and the more they try to push individuals, whether I or anyone else, to such a position, then generates it for them regardless of the satisfaction they get out of it. But it does not infiltrate my world.
“No matter what happened last night (VS AZ Alkmaar), I would still go home and ask my children as the concert goes. My life goes on. It’s not so overwhelming to feel the need to block it all or to respond to it. I don’t mind.
When asked if this is more intense because of where he comes from, Postecoglou said, “If I say that, people will only see me playing a victim map and I don’t want to do it. But 100 percent, there is an element of it. There is no doubt about it.
“Let me give you an example. No matter what the profession you are in, you are a plumber, you are a plumber, you are a police officer, you are a lawyer, you are a doctor, you are doing that job 26, 27 years.
“No matter what you do, do you think that person has a pretty good idea of this job? Would you ever question his knowledge of the job? Would you ever question if any decision he made was thinking or experienced before?
“If you survive for 26, 27 years, it means you haven’t filled too many times. Whatever you do, because if you are a plumber, then everywhere you go, if there is a leak, then you won’t get another job. If you are a doctor and people die, you are unlikely to start.
“If you do this for 26, 27, he has a fair idea of what he does. But then you could say that maybe it’s just a grinder?
“But then if that person started quite on the factory floor of that industry, no matter what the industry was, you may be the executive or anything else, and he ends up in a position where the best percentage of his profession comes, then you have to say: OK, this guy you have to have something. You can’t get that from a factory floor, from the basement to the first.
“I’m talking about the level, I’m not talking about expertise. But then you could say, okay, but he’s out of depth now. But if you ended up a club in the first year that finished eighth to fifth in fifth place … So when you put it all together, and then you hear, as I said, he’s not from his depth, he doesn’t know he doesn’t work.
“You may be critical of his performance, but you wouldn’t do it. Google my name and get a few titles. Just blur them on the wall. And you would say, I don’t think it somehow fits. But that is. Because that’s where we are there.
“There is a critical analysis of performance at all levels. And as I said, as you get higher, there are certainly bigger things.
“Forget the football manager, forget me. Any other, would you say that he has no idea what he is doing. No Plan B. is stubborn, his methods do not work. It’s out of depth.
“Where does that come from? From people who probably … Some were not born even when I first started operating. I started in 1996-97.
“You just have to accept that this is the part of the world I am in. But I accept it. I don’t have to respond to it. I can only laugh because I just think it’s funny.
“And that does not change me as a person, it doesn’t change anything I do or what I believe in or continue to continue. Since my career will continue. Everyone realizes that whatever happens, my career will continue. It’s a long answer, isn’t it?”
Do you still enjoy this time?
“I love it. No, I’m not saying that kind. I love the fact that, you know, there is a huge challenge and people doubt you and all such things.
“I love it. But I also think that some of this is just funny beyond its nature, which is anything else but only cheap and very shallow. I’m not talking about a critical analysis. I’m not talking about it, you know … Oh, Jeez, I’m going … now …
“I have another story, and then I’ll let you go. You know who is the biggest enemy for any manager? In today’s world, and he’s on the surface only in the last five, six years, maybe 10 years. Mr. Hindsight.
“You know who Mr. Hindsight is? He is a guy who, when the outcome there, has already done, all the answers with the greatest security that was so obvious and never wrong.
“And Mr. Hindsight will go out every time and assume that he will be a prophet of all Oric because he is just dealing with what happened after the event, never before. And such a mass of Mr. Hindsight. The killers should make a song about him. I would definitely buy it.
“You want to be critical or you want to have really strong opinions about things? List them before the event. Take them really clear and stand with them when they are wrong because I guarantee you will be as guilty as any manager who is not wrong, probably more often.
“But there are not many of them. There are some who do not do it before the event, after the event will always put a perspective on their analysis. But I see them, my friend, and I hear them after the events.” Oh, so obvious. Oh, how did he make a mistake that team choice? “
“Easy to deal with the outcome. Everyone can cope with the outcome. You don’t even need to understand football. This team won, that the team lost, that the team is better, that coach is better, these players are better, and the system is better, and the decisions are better, you will always be better – I could tell you that before the game.
“If these are just the results that make sense to have anything else? All we will do is the one who won, you put the column there and said that everyone writes the same piece for it and who lost, put the column there, everyone writes the same piece there. These managers are under pressure, these managers are the best. And then they turn it next week because the results go other way.
“But anyway, we should have had this out of net, I said too many things that make me regret it tomorrow.”
