January signatures ‘will help a lot’ in Brugge, says Emery

Manager Aston Villa Unai Emery says new signatures Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford will help them with the Champions League when they take on Tuesday by Club Brugge.

Asensio has achieved four times in his last three appearances, while Rashford has been a creative force since arriving on a lending from Manchester United.

Villa suffered a defeat in Bruges in November, descending on the bizarre penalty of the second half after Tyrone Mings picked up the ball from the goal of Emilian Martinez.

Emery said: “We added players with experience in Europe, usually playing at the highest level and they will help us a lot, but we will see it.

“The process they work, progressively adapts to us and goes well and becomes better – as we want to try and use our structure, defensive, offensive.

“We will not achieve our goal only through individual players. We will get a goal collectively, building our structure as hard as possible.

“Then our individual players can show their skill. This is the challenge we have, it is my challenge, the challenge of the players and each has a goal, hopefully we can share together, achieve our goal in the next three months.”

Emery expects his players to produce performance in Belgium – and if he wins over two legs of the villa, he will face PSG or Liverpool in the last eight.

Emery said, “When we played here, we didn’t compete as I want. And, of course, players we know and analyzed why we didn’t compete at that moment.

“I hope we can do more. We need to achieve balance and play, trying to manage our emotions well, because now, of course, the key moment for the season, tomorrow and the second part of this competition.

“And we have to try to play to be responsible, to be mature and emotionally stronger.”
