Man City find themselves at the heart of another legal battle, but this time the challenge comes outside England.
According to Sky SportsLa Liga President Javier Tebas has filed a formal appeal to the European Commission, accusing the ruling Premier League champions for violating the EU Competition Act.
The appeal, which was allegedly filed in 2023, states that City received financial support from the United Arab Emirates, giving them an unfair advantage in the European transfer market. Tebas claims that these subsidies have allowed City to hire top players and managers outside what would be feasible under the usual financial limitations.
Spanish football chief Tebas also called for sanctions against the city. Said (quotes by way Fox Sports):
“We reported Manchester City in the EU. Although they are an English team, not part of the EU, they still have commercial activities in Europe. We first filed an appeal in July 2023 and now there are regulations that allow the EU to view companies like City Football Group.
“There are two aspects. The first check of Manchester City does not use other system cheating companies. The second element is a bigger battle to stop football that ends up in the hands of state entities without the appropriate police.
“Our case against Manchester City refers to two things. We are making a problem with some of the prices paid by the club. And we ask the club who can instill losses in other related companies that are not directly part of the city football group.”
“I can’t talk yet any sanctions on Manchester City on this regard. All I can say is when, in general, a company in Europe, in general, has distorted the market, often have to return funds. We want Manchester City to sanction.
“The case is currently in the investigation phase. We haven’t had an answer yet. Remember, EU has many cases.”
Manchester City, however, strongly rejected these claims, claiming that their financial operations were fully in accordance with all regulations.
This is not the first time the city has been under the supervision of financial things. In 2020, the arbitration court for sports (CAS) canceled the decision of UEFA to impose a two-year European ban on the club, judging that the sentence was unjustified.
The Premier League firsts are currently involved in a separate investigation after being charged with 115 alleged financial violations of English top flight. The judgment of this case is expected in the coming months, with Potential grave consequences, including fines, points of points or even historical recalls if they are found guilty.
In addition, City recently launched a legal lawsuit against the Premier League in relation to the rules of associated party transactions (APT), the case that eventually won.
Furthermore, La Liga Club Real Valladolid, recently accused City of eavesdropping on his young defender Júsuf Demir and threatened them with legal procedure.
While City continues to fight legal troubles behind the scenes, their appearance on the field also brought a decline this season.
Pep Guardiola’s side has already been eliminated from the Champions League before the 16th round and suffered an early exit to Carabao Cup.
In the Premier League, City is out of the race with the title, and is currently sitting in fourth place, fighting for the Top 4 Finish, which is far from their usual domination.
While the city is still engaged in legal challenges, the outcome of this last dispute could have long -term consequences for the future of the club in European football.
