Irish boxer John Cooney died a week after a fight for a title on the Celtic Super-Titul in Ulster Hall in Belfast.
Cooney, 28, was stopped in the ninth round of his fight against Welsh Nathan Howells on February 1st. He was transported to the hospital, where he was undergoing surgery on bleeding in the brain and was admitted to intensive care.
His promoters of the MHD promotion on Saturday announced that he had passed away.
“Just with complete destruction, we have to announce that after a week of fighting for his life, John Cooney unfortunately passed away,” read the post.
“Mr. and Mrs. Cooney and his fiancé Emmaleen would like to thank the staff at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital, who tirelessly worked to save John’s life and for all who sent messages to support and prayers.
“He was a very beloved son, brother and partner and we will need our whole life to forget how special he was. Rip John ‘The Kid Cooney’.”
Cooney won the Keltic title of Super-Feateewet with a win in the first round over Liam Gaynor in Dublin in November 2023, part of the same sale of the show in which Katie Taylor defeated Chantelle Cameron by the majority decision.
He spent a year out of the ring with his hands injury, but in October he returned to the defeat of Tampel Maharussi to York Hall before fought again last week.
