The President of the National Association of Air Traffic Controllers (NATCA) addressed his concern about the shortage of air traffic controller staff, highlighting a wide need for funding during a CNN on Saturday.
“I am here to say -you are not enough air traffic controllers and we must continue to approach it. We appreciate the Secretary Duffy, now he looked free from the hiring of air traffic controllers, but right now there are 10,800 Certified controllers across the country, “said Natca Nick Daniels a Air.
He said that the training schedule could cause a delay in the contracting process.
“We are supposed to be at 14,335. It is a process of rigorous training. So it is not like we could go out today and hire the 3,600,” he said.
“It takes two to three years to get a driver qualified conditionally only to enter work and there are several points where they can fail to be a air traffic controller. All from the academy to the training of Locally simulation and, finally, talking with aircraft on his own, “continued Daniels.
Daniels argued that more funding is needed to uphold security standards and staff requirements for airs traffic control professionals.
“It was approved, a re -authorization of the FAA of the maximum contracting of air traffic controllers for five years, but we must maintain the focus on it, ensure that it is properly financed and then it goes into modernization,” he said.
“We also want to work with President Trump on hiring the best and brightest.”
The President of the Natca concluded by emphasizing the long hours that can be added to the stressors of the airline drivers after the mortal fall this week near the National Airport of Reagan.
“As I said, we need to talk about the tensions of this job. We are currently in 60 weeks of work to constitute many of these losses of air traffic controllers that there are 60 hours in this week. And fatigue, “he said.
“We want to work on the benefits of payment and the tensions that are achieved with this work, with this administration.”
The fatal collision between an American Airlines plane and a Black Hawk army helicopter killed 67 people. An investigation is being performed to determine what caused the air disaster, one of the worst of recent decades.
