Van Nistelrooy allays fears after poor streak

Ruud van Nistelrooy has played down fears he could be sacked by Leicester just 56 days into his reign.

The Dutch manager, who replaced Steve Cooper in December, has overseen a run of seven successive Premier League defeats. Another defeat against Tottenham on Sunday would equal the club’s record from 2001.

“I’m focused on getting this team out of the situation, that’s my only concern,” Van Nistelrooy said when asked if he was worried about his job.

“I’m with the players, I’m working with everyone at Leicester to get the best out of this team, even in difficult times. In difficult times, one should be strong, show character, work and persevere and be committed.

“We are united and committed. That’s the spirit and you can see it on the field. I see a team with spirit and fight. If we keep going, this race will be over.”

Leicester are in 19th place, two points from safety, after last Saturday’s 2-0 defeat by Fulham.

“We know where we are in the league, but for the remaining games it will be necessary to get out of this situation,” added the former Manchester United striker.

“On Sunday there is a new game where we can start fighting to get out of this period. This is when you need character, togetherness and unity. We are it.”

Patience is not for sale

Van Nistelrooy has said midfielder Wilfried Ndidi is not for sale this month following speculation linking him with a move to Monaco.

“No, of course not,” he replied when asked if Ndidi, who is close to returning from a hamstring injury, could leave.

“Wilfred is a key player and person in the team and in the club and I am glad that he is almost here to help the team again.

“We know how much we missed him and we know that we need him. Wilf is the key in the coming months, a key part of this team that can get us out of this situation.”

Van Nistelrooy said the £10m sale of striker Tom Cannon to Sheffield United would affect their business in January, but admitted he was unsure if the Foxes would have any new arrivals before the deadline.

He said: “The situation for the last week is clear, we are looking at options to strengthen the team.

“This deal with Tom is part of that situation and looking at the players to strengthen the team within the scope of the opportunity.

“No (the club’s decision has not changed), we are still here. Of course, things change when players like Tom leave. We are still in that process.

“(The first few weeks of the window) have not been wasted as we focus on the players we have to improve the team and get them out of this situation. New players are a bonus.

“We have the right back we needed. We’ll see if we can step up, but if not, we’ll work with what we have.

“The work is in progress. We try to do what is possible within the limits of the possibilities. There is no news of anything at this time.”
