The Senate Intelligence Committee has scheduled a hearing to review the nomination of Tulsi Gabbard as director of national intelligence.
The Jan. 30 hearing comes after Democrats resisted programming from an earlier hearing, saying they still did not have the full list of background checks, ethics disclosures and paperwork on a candidate whose overall qualifications have raised concerns.
If confirmed, Gabbard, a former Democratic congressman, would lead the agency responsible for overseeing the 18 US intelligence agencies.
Gabbard is one of President Trump’s most controversial nominees, with lawmakers pointing to her lack of experience in the field of intelligence, and perhaps more significantly, she relations with US adversaries.
In 2017, he met with recently deposed Syrian leader Bashar Assad. The meeting came after allegations that Assad used chemical weapons against his own people.
She has also been a high-profile defender of national security leaker Edward Snowden and has echoed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s rhetoric on the war in Ukraine.
But he had made progress with some lawmakers in recent weeks by reversing his view on Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which now supports the tool that allows the United States to spy on foreigners located abroad without no order
She has been looking too explain his past support for Snowdensaying he did not believe the intelligence community had sufficient channels to raise concerns.
However, this explanation has not gone down well with all lawmakers on the Intelligence Committee, who have called the National Security Agency leaker a traitor.
