LA Hughes Fire only 14% contained after burning 10,000 acres


The Hughes Fire in Los Angeles has now burned more than 10,000 acres and remains only 14 percent contained, city fire officials announced Thursday.

The Hughes Fire, which was first reported Wednesday morning, was first located in the unincorporated community of Castaic in northwest Los Angeles County. It spread quickly thanks to aggressive winds that have hampered firefighting efforts for weeks.

More than 4,000 firefighters are assigned to the Hughes Fire, according to authorities.

“Weather is the primary driver of this fire and its spread at this time. A red flag warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. Friday,” Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said. in a statement. “It’s still a tough fire to contain, even though we’re getting the upper hand.”

The fire has forced the evacuation of about 50,000 people and also caused temporary road closures on Interstate 5 on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, Cal Fire urged residents in several regions near the Hughes Fire to leave immediately, including around Castaic Lake, Paradise Ranch and the Ridge Trail.

“Immediate threat to life. This is a legal order to LEAVE NOW,” the Cal Fire alert reads. “The area is legally closed to the public.”

There have also been reports of a fire on Sepúlveda Pass near Sherman Oaks. The fire was initially reported as one acre, but the Los Angeles Fire Department He has since reported that all progress has stalled on the approximately 40-acre fire.

“The evacuation notice is lifted. There are no structures damaged and no injuries. Firefighters will remain on the scene overnight doing cleanup operations to ensure there are no hot spots. Mayor Karen Bass says that while the fire is being tackled, all Angelenos should heed the warnings of public safety officials.

The new fires come amid a deadly wildfire season in the Golden State as firefighters have battled destructive wildfires in Southern California for weeks.
