The US Pentagon is sending an extra one 1,500 in active service troops on the southern border by the end of the month, a US official told Fox News on Wednesday.
It was not immediately clear which specific units would be sent, though the Trump administration is expected to make a formal announcement later Wednesday.
There are already 2,500 US service members stationed at the southern border The troops were ordered there in May 2023 during the Biden administration under Title 10 authorities, were approved by former Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, and are expected to be in place through the end of the fiscal year 2025, according to a spokesman for the US Northern Command.
The additional 1,500 service members will be deployed to various locations along the southern border by the end of the month, the US official said.
The added troops will serve in the same roles as existing service members, providing aerial reconnaissance, data entry, training, vehicle maintenance, detection and monitoring and some other logistical support functions.
The announcement will mark the third time US troops have been sent to the southern border in the past two years.
In May 2023, ex President Joe Biden and Austin approved a request by former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to send an additional 1,500 active-duty troops to the southern border for 90 days to help with the influx of migrants after the health restrictions of the era of the pandemic end in May 2023.
In March 2024, Austin approved another DHS request for 2,500 service members, including National Guardsmen under Title 10 service status.
