Like President Donald Trumpet was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on Monday, grifters and opportunity were already looking to cash in on Trump’s new term – including the president himself.
A few days before his inauguration, Trump launched memecoin called $TRUMP to “celebrate our success and be happy,” warning that “it was not intended to be … a sales opportunity.” Trump announced the launch of X and Truth Social, many are wondering if the president’s accounts had been stolen.
However, in just a few hours, thousands of people invested in cryptocurrency. The sale was a success that, out of billions of dollars, they took about 90 percent of Trump’s total wealth. However, like most memecoins, the price of $TRUMP currency fluctuated and fell sharply on Sunday, with the price drop continuing on Monday.
During his inauguration as President on Monday, $TRUMP memecoin was valuable shy of $50 billion, with Trump keeping 80 percent of the money. This currency, built on the Solana blockchain, allows anyone in the world to donate money to the US President.
First Lady Melania Trump also launched her own memecoin on Sunday, and while it didn’t reach the level of Trump’s memecoin, $MELANIA money it was worth about $8 billion on Monday.
The president and first lady were far from the only ones looking to cash in on Trump’s second term, especially over the weekend. Since his first term in office, Trump has attracted all kinds of grifts and gambles, many of which have been approved by the president himself, including everything from guitars and shoes to trading cards and cash.
Religion is also on the table. Lee Greenwood, a country singer, said Sunday that Trump could use a special edition of the song “God Bless the USA” bible for his oath – the same Bible that the singer has been selling with Trump since last March.
The “Inauguration Day Edition” Bible has been for sale on Greenwood’s website, along with hot pink and camo Bibles — for $70 last week, but by the time Trump took office on Monday, the Bible appears to have already sold out.
A garden of other commemorative items are on sale, from the many “Opening Day” t-shirts and hats being sold on platforms like Amazon and Etsy to the special “Opening Edition” roast from Victory Coffee. A Texas jeweler is gifting the president with an 8-carat diamond as his headpiece in what appears to be an advertisement.
And because Trump’s inauguration was moved indoors due to extreme cold, thousands of people who were sent tickets to the event were unable to use them. People have tried to cash in on these tickets, with many listings on eBay offering unused tickets for up to $200 each. The tickets were distributed free of charge by members of Parliament and have a hologram and signature of the representative provided by his office. Many of the entries are already sold out, with some retailers offering multiple tickets.
A site offering commemorative tickets for the opening was also set up, with some tickets being offered for up to $900. It is not known who is behind the site, but the site is ranked number two in a Google search for “commemorative opening tickets.”
Grifting and taking money from Trumpworld is nothing new. Since Trump took office in 2016, he and his sycophantic supporters have received a variety of measures. With Trump’s support, many numbers have made all jobs difficult topics like stolen elections or Resistance to COVID.
