New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik announced her fiery rants to university administrators on Tuesday when she appeared before Senate lawmakers as part of her confirmation process to serve as ambassador to the U.N., saying it was a “watershed moment” she exposed the “anti-Semitic rot” in American universities.
“My oversight work led to the most watched testimony in history, in the history of Congress. This hearing with college presidents was heard around the world and viewed billions of times because it exposed the anti-Semitic rot to colleges and universities, and it was a watershed moment in American higher education,” Stefanik said Tuesday while speaking before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Since 2023, Stefanik has served as a conservative brand who has repeatedly criticized “morally bankrupt” university leaders for their handling of anti-Semitism on campus after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023.
During the college term last year, student agitators and protesters flooded college campuses across the country to protest the war in Israel, which also included instances of anti-Semitism and Jewish students publicly declaring that they would not they feel safe on some campuses.

Most notably, Stefanik asked Ivy League university administrators at Penn and Harvard, his alma mater, in December 2023 about whether “calling for the genocide of the Jews” violates the respective school’s codes of conduct. The school principals, however, were puzzled in their responses.
“It might be, depending on the context,” replied Harvard’s then-president Claudine Gay when asked whether “calling for the genocide of the Jews” violated the school’s rules of conduct.
“Anti-Semitic speech when it intersects with conduct that amounts to harassment, bullying, intimidation, is actionable conduct, and we act,” Gay said when pressed to answer “yes” or “no” if they break down calls for the genocide of the Jews. school rules

Both Gay and then-Penn president Liz Magill resigned from their high-profile positions shortly after the hearing, while footage of the exchanges spread like wildfire on social media.

President Donald Trump nominated Stefanik to serve as ambassador to the UN in November, hailing her as an “incredibly strong, tough and smart America First fighter.”
Stefanik said in his opening remarks on Tuesday that Trump sees “great promise” for the United Nations if it returns to its roots of promoting peace around the world.
