Black Circle Enters ‘Cursed’ Style With Psychic Horrors

A holdover from the 1970s – self-help history in order to teach the listener to “fulfill all thy might”—causes a terrible turmoil for the two sisters in the Black CircleA horror film of 2018 that is worth seeking out now that it is streaming on Shudder.

Made in Sweden by the Spanish writer-director Adrian Garcia Bogliano (2022’s The Exorcist), Black Circle he gets you into woo-woo by opening a video clip that he claims was taken from a correspondence course run by the “Stockholm Institute for Magnetic Research.” The method he is pushing is a form of hypnotism taken to an extreme, and the claims are very good. Who wouldn’t want to be independent just by getting rid of all the negative energy and confusing thoughts that have been holding them since childhood?

It’s a tempting proposition for Celeste (Felice Jankell), a twenty-something whose life revolves around the current drain. She has just broken up with her boyfriend and lost her summer job, and writer’s block has prevented her from even starting a long school paper. So when her sister Isa (Erica Midfjäll)—whom she hasn’t seen before—invites her to come to her office, Celeste is impressed by Isa’s hard work and her cheerful attitude. Things are going well, Isa tells her, and she wants to help Celeste change her life.

Even Celeste is happy with her stubborn sister, which is replaced by confusion when Isa hands her a record and tells her to “play the B side while you sleep.” The results are life-changing, he promises, and it all comes from this amazing LP he found among the food left by “grandmother Lundstrom’s cousin,” who until her death was another relative of the widowed sisters. Celeste is suspicious of what sounds like a cult coming, but she’s just curious. The next morning, he sits up straight, rushes to his laptop, and triumphantly turns page after page of his paper.

Naturally, there is a catch to this miracle good luck, and such Black Circle wanting to show exactly what the fish looks like, the film divides itself into short chapters, not unlike correspondence courses. It also jumps into the film-within-the-film to layer in the description of “magnetic hypnosis,” delivered in a hopeful way that doesn’t match the difficulties we see with the sisters. The technique leads a person to unload the mental baggage that is holding them back – but once removed, it is said that the baggage takes the form of an “Ethereal Double,” a type of doppelganger that gradually draws more energy from its original source.

It’s confusing enough already Black Circle it introduces another myth, involving beings that intervene as the Ethereal Double is best in the human realm. That’s the part of the story that doesn’t get enough flesh, though Black Circle somehow it has been deeply invested in the overthrow of New Age thought. When their lives are choked by a hoax that could be real, Isa and Celeste track down the woman who leaked the information, a healer who experienced her own trauma while learning the dangers of magnetic hypnosis – and who quickly stepped in to help. his latest victims.

Although the “reverse exorcism” ritual that takes up the third part of the film drags a bit, Black Circle they have a unique energy and self-confidence, often a psychedelic look that allows them to create a special place in cursed films. But unlike the characters, for example, Ring-those who watch a boring video tape for fun, unaware that it will seal their doom- Black CircleThe LP sisters are intentionally, albeit unknowingly, open to LP’s mind-bending abilities. The next trip brings a lot of fear, but it also shows Black CircleA very deep theme: you need to do the necessary work to overcome the negative things that have accumulated in your life, instead of hoping for recovery by just wishing the bad things away.
