After the ban on TikTok went into effect on Sunday, the Bluesky social network started customizing videos on his platform. Now, Flipboard’s newest app, Surf, which is dedicated to open source web browsing and popular services such as Mastodon and Bluesky, is using this opportunity to present its own video.
Originally, the Surf video was a combination of videos on Bluesky’s “modern video” feed and posts that included the hashtag #SkyTok. The company says it will soon prepare its food for the user, too.
This will help differentiate Surf’s video feed from Bluesky’s own. It also represents the power that comes from letting other people create social media feeds. The flood is here beta and a registration list available for interested testers.
“This is the latest example of how online food is being used for a variety of purposes – video sharing, photo sharing, discussion groups, texting, and more. ,” Flipboard CEO Mike McCue told TechCrunch via email. “It’s still early days but things are moving very quickly here, especially on AT Proto (the protocol that powers Bluesky.)”
To update the new Surf videos, McCue said the company will soon add users’ Bluesky Time Tracking (which is another feed) as a feed source. This is also filtered to show only videos. After this last step is completed, the feed will show videos from the followers themselves.
After Bluesky Sunday posted their favorite videoswhich uses TikTok’s new interface, Surf also adopted the design of its feed. (Note: if you don’t see the TikTok feature on Bluesky, try restarting your mobile app several times.)
If you can’t use Surf, which is still in private beta, you can use it his feed directly on Bluesky. Surf has dedicated its new video feed to Blueksy where it is available as an alternative to the traditional, customizable feed.
McCue points out that Surf itself can be used to create different types of video content, too.
For example, he rebuilt “BookTok” feed type, which focuses on users discussing books on video, similar to TikTok’s BookTok group. This feeding can be seen on both Swimming and Bluesky.
To create this feed, McCue combined all the videos with the hashtags #BookTok and #BookSky.
However, because those tags can be found on programs other than Bluesky, when you use the feed on Surf itself, you will be able to see videos from other sources such as YouTube, Threads, and Mastodon, in addition to videos from Bluesky. It is possible because Surf allows users to browse multiple social media sites in its software, including those managed by protocols such as ActivityPub (used by Mastodon), AT Protocol (used by Bluesky), and RSS.
