Federal, state and local law enforcement officials are on high alert in Washington, DC, earlier President-elect Donald Trump January 20 inauguration.
Thousands of officers and agents from the Department of Homeland Security, the DC Metropolitan Police Department, the US Capitol Police, the FBI, the US Secret Service and the National Guard will be on duty.
White House inaugurations are already among the highest level of security, but this year’s event is guaranteed to have extra scrutiny after multiple recent security incidents.
Earlier this month, a US military veteran used fireworks and other objects to explode a Tesla Cybertruck outside a Trump hotel in Las Vegas. US Capitol Police also arrested a man who tried to set fire to a car near where protesters were paying tribute to former President Jimmy Carter.
This comes after two failed attempts on the president-elect’s life while he was campaigning for a second term.
Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser touted confidence in law enforcement, telling local residents during a news conference exactly one week earlier the event to prepare for road closures.
Matt McCool, special agent in charge of the Secret Service’s Washington Field Office, said of the security preparations: “The Federal Aviation Administration will announce temporary flight restrictions in and around Washington, DC.”
The US Coast Guard will be contacted any maritime restrictions, which will also be linked to the inauguration website. The additional fences and concrete barriers will complement the fence already in place around the Capitol for President Carter’s election certification and funeral.
He added that the amount of fencing that will be used for the event is more than any other designated national security special event in the past.
David Sundberg of the FBI’s Washington field office said the bureau was not tracking “any specific or credible threats” for Inauguration Day, but urged people to remain vigilant.
At the beginning of this month, the National Guard he said he would send 7,800 troops to the inauguration.
Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith said the city’s police officers would be joined by nearly 4,000 officers from across the country who volunteered to support the opening day.

Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance will take the oath of office on the west front of the US Capitol on Monday.
Thousands of Americans are expected to attend, all of whom will be screened by US Secret Service and other law enforcement officials.
“All attendees will be screened. Designated checkpoints will be set up for members of the public interested in attending the inauguration,” McCool said.

Officials said last week they were preparing for nearly 250,000 attendees alone.
US Capitol Police on Monday asked people who will be present on the Capitol grounds to refrain from bringing items such as alcohol, bicycles, tripods, large bags, balloons and other items.
