Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of car accidents and a major reason for car insurance premiums expected to increase in 2025. For commercial ships, this is difficult. But for Netradyne’s California startup, it’s a whirlwind.
Netradyne provides ship owners, including big names like Amazonand AI-powered dashcams that collect vehicle data and videos to improve driver safety, reducing accidents by around 50%, per the company. The devices, which can come with both interior and exterior cameras, also use a peripheral computer to send drivers real-time alerts if they are distracted or driving dangerously, while rewarding drivers for good behavior.
TechCrunch was last reported Netradyne’s $150 million Series C in 2021, and since then the company has expanded beyond North America and India to Germany, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. In order to continue its expansion in Ireland and Japan in the coming months, Netradyne has just raised $90 million Series D at a total value of $1.35 billion, led by Point72 Private Investments with participation from Qualcomm Ventures and Pavilion Capital.
And with great size comes great data. Over the years, Netradyne has collected more than 18 billion pieces of data, which the company says has helped improve sales up to 99% accuracy of alerts and 25 million successful follow-ups.
Apart from the international expansion, the new headquarters will also increase sales and improve the business’s go-to-market.
Today, fleets can access Netradyne’s Safety Manager Assistant, an AI-powered pilot that provides a natural language interface to the company’s portal and uses native AI to discuss data and information. Avneesh Agrawal, CEO and co-founder of Netradyne, told TechCrunch that the company will invest heavily in artificial intelligence, adding more applications to its driver and “helpful approach”.
Agrawal also said that Netradyne will use its massive data to create driving models that focus on driving behavior to improve self-driving technology.
“We have advanced vision that analyzes all aspects of traffic and driving and reads various road signs. No one in the independent industry has this,” said Agrawal. “Our goal now is to train drivers using generative AI to detect side traffic.”
He added that Netradyne’s goal is not to develop its own AV technology, but to collaborate with others and provide basic data and information.
Netradyne’s customers operate fleets that operate in the internet, food and beverage, oil and gas, utilities, construction, and more. Getting started offers two main things. The first is a quad-view dashcam that collects images from the road, the driver’s view, and two side window cameras in one easy-to-install device. This distracts drivers, reduces blind spots, and provides evidence in the event of an accident. The second is a dual camera, which faces the road and the driver.
Fleet owners who need more visibility can use the Hub-X accessory, which is an add-on to the dashcam that supports up to four additional cameras to be placed wherever they want, such as looking at the rear of the bus.
The startup also offers a driver monitoring system that can be added to the quad camera to detect driving behavior using a dedicated night-time sensor and multi-lens vision, according to the company.
In response to concerns about driver privacy, Agrawal says Netradyne complies with GDPR and does not share driver information with external parties.
“Investing in Netradyne is a belief in safer roads and supporting professional drivers,” Sri Chandrasekar, managing partner at Point72 Private Investments, said. “Since our initial investment in 2018, we have seen Netradyne’s impressive growth and believe their technology is well positioned to not only empower fleet managers but also foster a culture of driving excellence.”
Agrawal said Netradyne has seen 65% growth in the past 12 months, and expects to be profitable in the coming year.
