How to save your TikTok videos, data before the impending ban

Those looking to save their TikTok memories are in luck ahead of them imminent closure Sunday in the United States.

Except for a last-minute change, the popular social networking app will not be available in the 50 states after that of the Supreme Court unanimous decision Friday to uphold a law banning TikTok before Jan. 19 unless it is sold by Chinese parent company ByteDance.

TikTok users can download their videos, their data, including follower lists and direct messages, and videos from other creators.

How to download TikTok videos

To download individual videos, users can go to their profile page, choose a video, and then click the three lines on the right side of the screen. From there, you can click “Save Video” or email it where you can download the clip before Sunday.

It can also be downloaded from the TikTok website on a laptop or computer. You can right-click on a video and choose the “Download Video” option. This option will probably mean that there is a TikTok watermark on the video.

Getting all your videos at once is a bit more difficult. Third-party sites are available, but their level of security varies.

Use Chrome extensions to download TikTok videos

Chrome extensions are another available option. Searching for “TikTok Downloader”, a common phrase associated with doing this activity, will help you find a suitable device. To finish the download, you will need to click “Download All”.

As for the data, the easiest way to do this is to tap the three lines at the top right of the profile page before choosing “Settings and privacy” and then “Account”. Then you can click “Download your data”.

You can follow the same steps on your laptop or desktop. There are options to download all of your data or a refined amount. File formats vary between text and JavaScript Object Notation (JSON).

If creators allow their videos to be downloaded, you may be able to save them if TikTok shuts down on Sunday.
